Woodward Handicap Cup 2008 The final session of this season’s competition was held at Hollington on Saturday 23rd February. The evening started with two preliminary matches. In the first Laurence Dodd (Tigers – Division 3) gave a 9 point start in each game to John Wond (Saints – Division 4) and won 21-13, 17-21, 21-19. The second match also went to a third game when Claire Hodger (Saints – Division 3) lost 21-15, 15-21, 13-21 to Dave Turnbull (Monarchs – Division 3), who received a 7 point start. The quarter-finals began with another three setter: Eric Cruttenden (Nalgo – Division 4) lost to Trevor Towner (Tigers – Division 4) 21-19, 16-21, 11-21, having received 7 points in each game. Then Jamie Martin (Hollington – Division 1) beat Andre Keen (Saints – Division 1) 21-17, 21-10 after having a 4 point start. The third quarter-final saw Paul Hyland (Nalgo – Division 2) triumph by 22-20, 21-17 over Dave Turnbull who received 11 points in each game, and finally Laurence Dodd won through against his team-mate, Roger Smith, by 21-18, 24-22, having given Roger a 7 point start. In the first semi-final Laurence defeated Trevor Towner by 21-14, 21-19, having given a 9 point start in each game. The second semi-final saw Jamie beat Paul by 22-20, 14-21, 21-11, both players starting at 0 in each game. The final produced a win for Jamie by 21-13, 21-18 over Laurence despite a 6 point start in each game for Laurence. The Hastings Association’s President, Teresa Bennett, presented the trophies.

These ten players now play in the final session to be held at Hollington on Saturday 23 February. Spectators are welcome to watch the final session on Saturday evening in the main hall at Hollington. |
