Woodward Handicap Cup 2009
From a total entry of 78 players, 11 reached the final session of this annual handicap competition played at the Civil Service Sports Club on Saturday 7th March.
In the first round matches Keith Barber (Bexhillians) of Division 2 beat Roger Smith (Tigers), also of Division 2, by 27-25, 21-17, having given a 3 point start in each game. (This was the third consecutive year that Roger has made the final session.) Then James Eaglestone of Division 3 defeated Andy Furnival (both of Hollington) of Division 1 21-7, 21-9, having received 13 points in each game. The final first round match saw a victory for Matt Martin (Hollington) over Kevin Rowe (Tackleway), both from Division 2, by 21-15, 17-21, 22-20, having given a 5 point start.
The first quarter-final match resulted in a win for Dave Turnbull (Monarchs) over Trevor Towner (Tigers), both of Division 3, by 21-16, 4-21, 12-13, having received 4 points in each game. Then Nathan Hodd (Hollington) defeated Martin Richards (Saints), again both of Division 3, by 21-16, 21-14, having received a 10 point start. The next match saw a victory for Matt Martin over Clive Drew-Clifton (Tigers) of Division 1 21-9, 21-14, Clive giving 7 points to Matt in each game. The last quarter-final produced a win for James Eaglestone over Keith Barber by 21-13, 21-17, having received an 8 point start.
In the semi-finals Nathan defeated his club mate Matt 21-15, 21-15, who gave him 10 points in each game, and James Eaglestone beat Dave Turnbull by 21-14, 21-11 (both had the same handicap).
So the final was between team mates Nathan and James (both juniors), and resulted in a 21-19, 17-21, 21-14 win for Nathan who received a 6 point start from James. Sheila King Organiser |
